5 amazing hidden bars in Copenhagen only locals know about

Although Copenhagen isn’t the biggest city in the world–with its almost 1 million inhabitants, it’s quite the contrary–it still has it all. Amazing restaurants (actually the second-best in the world!), sights for sore eyes, shopping–and most importantly, bars. Here, you can try unique drinks, have fun with friends and explore the Danish nightlife.

Here are five amazing bars in Copenhagen that you won’t find on the first page of the traditional (and boring) guides.

Balderdash – with a spritz of bacon

Valkendorfsgade 11

Originally from NYC, owner Geoffrey Canilao is the Noma chef of cocktails. Fancy a spritz of bacon on your drink? At Balderdash, it’s possible. It might sound weird, but trust us, whatever Geoffrey creates turns into magic served as a cocktail. A favorite is the infamous Balderdash grasshopper milkshake (beware! It tastes like a dream and it has absinthe – a dangerous combination).

The bar is located in a historic house that’s more than a hundred years old, and the crowd is a mix of young and old, Danes and expats looking for a cocktail masterpiece.

1656 – fancy speakeasy

Gasværksvej 33

While 1656 isn’t exactly a speakeasy, as you just enter the cocktail bar through the door, it’s hard to see that this place is a bar when looking from the outside. The facade is dark, there are no logos or signs and only a small window lets you see the bar inside. The location is perfect if you’re looking to drink incognito style.

The interior is dark and gorgeous, and the menu is innovative and changes with the seasons. Ask the expert bartender for what you should get.

Lidkøb – fun with friends

Vesterbrogade 72b

This is the spot for the hip crowd of Copenhagen. With colorful string lights, this bar is located in a back alley behind a big supermarket. If you don’t know it’s there, you don’t notice it. Lidkøb spreads over two floors, the second floor being the whiskey bar. If whiskey is your thing, go to the second floor. If not, stay downstairs and do yourself a favor and try the frozen banana walnut daiquiri.

Vinhanen – wine on tap

Baggesensgade 13 & Enghavevej 24

The concept of this wine bar is quite interesting. For sustainability, quality and financial reasons, Vinhanen imports tanks of wine around the world. This way, no bottles are needed, and the bartender can serve wine fresh from the tap. This also keeps their prices low. Ultimately, wine-loving guests can enjoy great wine without breaking the bank. What’s not to like?

Hviids Vinstue – 300 years old

Kongens Nytorv 19

This old school bar is an OG legendary spot – it’s been here for almost 300 years (since 1723). If you’re in Copenhagen during the Christmas holiday, this is the place to go for authentic Danish gløgg (mulled wine with almonds and raisins). If Christmas isn’t around, go for authentic Danish beer or anything of your preference. Hviids Vinstue is a place to remember.

Have fun exploring some of the best, most fun and unique bars that Copenhagen has to offer and have an extra drink for us!
