5 secret places in Copenhagen you cannot find in the travel guides

While most people know the colorful houses of Nyhavn, Amalienborg, the Queen’s castle and Tivoli, Copenhagen has way more than the traditional sights to offer. They might not be as well-known and popular, but that doesn’t make them any less wonderful.

In this post, you’re guided to five secret, different and magical places in Copenhagen that you definitely won’t find on the first page of the traditional travel guides. Have fun while exploring them!

Bibliotekshaven (The royal library garden)

Proviantpassagen 1

Located between the Christiansborg Palace where the Danish government resides and the Royal Library, this little garden is the perfect break from the busy city. The garden resembles an oasis as it is perfectly peaceful and quiet and very well-manicured by talented gardeners.

The garden was established in 1920 and features a reservoir with a fountain and wonderful flowerbeds. The garden has a tiny cafe that lets you purchase coffee and snacks. It’s the perfect place to take a small break to relax from exploring Copenhagen.

Kahyt og kaffe

Skibbroen 2

South of the center of Copenhagen, in the neighborhood called Sydhavn (South Harbour), you’ll find this very untraditional cafe. It’s a cafe on the water located in a former tiny ferry! The cafe is located inside the former pilothouse. From here, the owners serve beer, coffee, flaky croissants, burgers, and sandwiches – everything tastes yummy – and the guests can enjoy their food on deck if the weather allows it or inside the cabins.

The Cisterns

Søndermarken, Roskildevej 28

Get ready to dive deep underground. Under Søndermarken, a park in Copenhagen, you’ll find the cisterns, a former water reservoir that was built in 1859. The purpose of the cisterns was to provide the citizens of Copenhagen with fresh, clean drinking water.

Today, the cisterns have a different purpose. Come watch the underground cisterns and enjoy temporary art exhibitions.

Gasoline Grill

Vesterport Station

According to Bloomberg, Gasoline Grill serves one of the 27 best burgers in the world. And not only are the burgers next-level delicious, but Gasoline Grill also serves them from some funky locations. Their first burger spot is located within a former gas station – hence the name.

Another one of their more secret locations is directly on the central train station Gasoline Grill. Another benefit of this location is that you might be lucky and beat the lines since this location isn’t the most crowded one of the Gasoline Grill locations.

Brumleby & Olufsvej

In the middle of the 1800s, citizens of Copenhagen suffered from diseases as a result of bad living and housing conditions. A team of doctors planned out a new form of housing concept that would include more space, more light, and more nature. Brumleby, a tiny community in the Northern part of Copenhagen, is an example of that development.

Take a walk around the little community of cute, yellow houses where citizens still live today and make sure to pass Olufsvej right next to Brumleby that features townhouses in the colors of the rainbow. A perfect photo opt location.

Fingers crossed that these five secret spots will let you explore a different side of Copenhagen.
